The Walter W. Willis Rotary Scholarship Fund Started in 1983 by contributions from Rotary members and friends. Walter Willis was a Rotarian for 67 years, and served as Secretary of the Mansfield Rotary Club for 53 years. The Fund was started in recognition of Walter's years of service and dedication to Rotary. The Fund is operated by the Richland County Foundation. Scholarships amounting to nearly $40,000 have been granted from the Fund since its inception. Candidates apply through the Foundation, and a Rotary Committee makes the final choices. Scholarships are awarded from income, not principal. Principal value of the Fund is just over $66,192*.
The Tom Doty Fund was started in 1993 by contributions from Rotary members and friends, carrying out the vision and plan for it developed by Tom Doty. Tom, an active, dedicated Rotarian, was serving as President of the Mansfield Rotary Club at the time of his death. The Fund is operated by the Richland County Foundation as a donor-designated fund. Rotary's intent is to use fund income for worthy projects benefiting the Mansfield community. Typical grants have been made to Boy Scouts Camp Avery Hand (new roof for dining hall), and to Springmill School's beautification projects. Principal value of the Fund is $33,409*.
The McGowan Courage Awards Fund was started in 1990 by anonymous donors. The Fund's income provides annual cash awards to the winners of the Mansfield Rotary Club's Courage Awards. The Fund is operated by the Richland County Foundation. Brigadier General Bill McGowan of the Salvation Army was a long-time Rotarian. He believed that we easily recognize exceptional athletes and scholars, but often pass over young people who have fortitude to face reality and succeed in spite of great odds. Award winners are high school students in Richland County who have demonstrated outstanding courage and determination while overcoming a personal or physical handicap. They are selected by the Courage Awards Committee of the Cub, after nomination by their high school principal and counselors. The awards are distributed at the annual McGowan Courage Awards meeting of the Club in May. Principal value of the Fund is $113,846
