Learn about the Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

The Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Arch C. Klumph of Ohio, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of US $26.50 to more than US $55 million contributed in 2002-03. Its event-filled history is a story of Rotarians learning the value of service to humanity.

The Foundation's Humanitarian Programs fund international Rotary club and district projects to improve the quality of life, providing health care, clean water, food, education, and other essential needs primarily in the developing world. One of the major Humanitarian Programs is Polio Plus, which seeks to eradicate the poliovirus worldwide.

Through its Educational Programs, the Foundation provides funding for some 1,200 students to study abroad each year. Grants are also awarded to university teachers to teach in developing countries and for exchanges of business and professional people. Former participants in the Foundation's programs have the opportunity to continue their affiliation with Rotary as Foundation Alumni.

For more information on current Foundation program awards and financial status see the Rotary Foundation Fact Card and the Rotary Foundation Annual Report, both of which are available for download at http://www.rotary.org/foundation/index.html. You will find a wealth of information at this site!

We Care Program

A big Thank you! to Tim Campbell, Dearman Moving and Storage, our own Mansfield Rotarian, for moving and temporarily storing, or housing 1,600 new, Scholastic books, this Tuesday, November 22. The donated books will be distributed to “children at risk” in Richland County, through the We Care Program. And a big thank you, too, to the Volunteers of America for the latest donation of Scholastic books to benefit children at risk in Richland County.

The Project Committee Chairman asked for a permanent (actually a pass through) storage space, about half the size of a one car garage, ideally with some shelving and a table for putting labels in the books, BEFORE distribution to Mansfield Rotarians’ existing projects, School Tutoring Program, the Salvation Army, Schools’ children at risk, through the police (this has happened and is in the works), and other organizations. The goal is to distribute the items (books, blankets, donated educational items) as quickly as possible to children at risk - to keep as their own - or to specifically benefit these children. Also, rather than needing “storage,” the books will go to others and other groups who will help to “distribute” the items, ASAP, so the books are in the hands of the children at risk, our target group.

The We Care Program (books and blankets to children at risk) was started in 2004, by Carol L. Au, Mansfield Rotarian. The first cash donation ($1,000.00) was from Ontario Rotary. It was to We Care to benefit the Shelter children. Carol and her committee have, thus far, through that and other donations from other groups, been able to establish a “library” serving two age groups at the Domestic Violence Shelter, which serves women and children in Richland, Ashland, and Huron Counties; and, to provide a book and blanket (or handmade quilt) to each child entering the Shelter to keep. There is presently a supply of both books and blankets in reserve at the Shelter for new arrivals. Other donated items have benefited the Shelter, also; the Cops and Kids Program, October 2005; Friendly House, December 2005; and Carpenter School, November 2005. The donations also included more donated books, art paper and supplies, school supplies, blankets, and educational toys. The program is growing so quickly that help is needed for this worthy project.

This new, large supply of books is designated to children at risk in Richland County. We Care would like to further this project (provide a how to guide for other Rotarians in Ohio) and benefit our present Mansfield Rotary projects such as school tutoring and increasing literacy throughout Ohio, as our Governor of Rotary, Abe Kuttohara, suggested.

Best wishes to all,
Carol L. Au, Questions? 419-529-9333

National Monument

A national monument honoring 20 leaders of major volunteer movements in the United States, including
Rotary founder Paul P. Harris, and Elyria’s Edgar (Daddy) Allen http://www.extramile.us/honorees/allen.cfm was unveiled in Washington, D.C., on 14 October.
Former President George Bush led the dedication ceremony for the Extra Mile-Points of Light Volunteer Pathway, a series of markers set along a mile long stretch of sidewalks near the White House and the U.S. Treasury Department. Hand-sculpted bronze medallions embedded in granite and set into the sidewalk mark the monument. Each medallion measures 42 inches in diameter and bears a bas-relief image of the honoree, a description of the volunteer's achievements, and a quotation.
The Paul Harris medallion, the third along the pathway, is located outside the Hotel Washington
"It was nice that that spot was selected," said a spokesman. "Another great thing is that Paul Harris and Edgar 'Daddy' Allen, founder of Easter Seals, are side by side, at number three and four, on the monument. They were good friends." Other Extra Mile honorees include Clara Barton, Cesar Chavez, Frederick Douglass, and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the founders of Goodwill Industries, Lions Clubs International, and Volunteers of America.
